Garage Door Painting Services
Getting the material right determines whether the finish lasts or fails within a season. We match our preparation and primer to the door type on every job.
Timber Garage Doors
Timber garage doors require proper preparation before any new coating is applied. We strip back to sound material, sand the surface, and fill any cracks or splits with exterior-grade filler.
Bare timber is primed with an oil-based or specialist timber primer before finish coats. We apply durable exterior gloss or satin in the colour of your choice.
Metal and Steel Doors
Metal garage doors corrode when rust is left untreated beneath the finish. We wire-brush surface rust, apply a rust converter, and prime with a rust-inhibiting metal primer before any finish coat.
More advanced corrosion is assessed at the site visit. We advise on whether painting is viable or whether replacement is the better course before committing to a job that cannot hold a finish.
Combining with a Full Exterior Repaint
Garage doors are regularly painted as part of a wider exterior repaint programme. Including them at the same time means one visit and a consistent finish across the whole front elevation.
See our exterior painting page for the full scope of exterior services, or our front door painting page for front door work alongside.

Side-hinged, up-and-over, and double garage doors are all treated using the same thorough preparation sequence.
GRP Composite and uPVC Garage Doors
Non-porous door materials need specialist preparation. Standard primers cannot bond to GRP or uPVC — using the wrong primer is the most common cause of peeling on composite and plastic doors.

GRP and Composite Doors
GRP (glass reinforced plastic) composite doors are common on newer homes across Surrey’s executive and modern stock. The material is smooth and non-porous — standard primers cannot bond to it.
A specialist adhesion primer must go on before any topcoat. Once primed correctly, the colour range is wide, including premium shades from Farrow and Ball and Little Greene.
uPVC Garage Doors
uPVC garage doors can be painted to a durable finish with the correct preparation. Specialist plastic primers bond to the uPVC surface and create the base for the finish coat.
Contemporary grey and anthracite tones are a popular choice on Surrey’s larger detached and executive properties. White refresh is the most common request on 1930s and post-war semis.
Colour Matching
We offer colour matching to coordinate the garage door with the front door, window frames, or house exterior. Bring a colour reference — a paint code, a product name, or a sample — and we can match it or find the closest equivalent.
We work with Farrow and Ball and Little Greene colour references for Surrey clients using premium paint ranges on the rest of their exterior.
With the correct primer system in place, painted GRP and uPVC doors hold their finish for five to eight years before a maintenance repaint is needed.
How Our Garage Door Painting Works
1. Assessment
We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.
2. Surface Preparation
Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.
3. Priming
Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are standard for garage doors. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.
5. Final Check
We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.

Garage Door Painting Costs in Surrey
Prices vary with door size, material, and the condition of the existing coating. We provide a fixed price after assessing the door. Typical range: £180 to £450.
Timber and uPVC Doors
- Timber up-and-over or side-hinged door (sound condition): £180–280
- uPVC door: £180–280
- Double garage door (any material): add 50–80% to the above
Metal and Composite Doors
- Metal or steel door with rust treatment needed: £220–350
- GRP or composite door: £200–320
- Double garage door (any material): add 50–80% to the above
What Affects the Price
The condition of the existing coating is the biggest variable. Surface rust on a metal door adds preparation time. Multiple layers of peeling paint on timber need stripping back before priming can begin.
We assess all of this at the site visit and quote a fixed price before any work starts. No surprises on the final invoice.

Doors in poor condition — heavy rust, peeling in multiple layers, or significant wood rot — require more preparation time and fall toward the higher end. Call 01483 930151 to arrange a site visit and fixed quote.
